New Frontier Aerospace Appoints Rich Pournelle to Lead Business Development
New Frontier Aerospace (NFA), a developer of advanced propulsion systems and hypersonic platforms, has named Rich Pournelle as Director of Business Development. The appointment signals the company’s transition from technology development to market deployment, with a focus on commercializing its Mjölnir engine, Bifröst orbit transfer spacecraft, and Pathfinder hypersonic VTOL platform.
Pournelle brings more than two decades of experience in aerospace commercialization, having held leadership roles at Benchmark Space Systems, Nanoracks, and XCOR Aerospace. His background spans orbital logistics, propulsion integration, and government contracting, positioning him to guide NFA’s growth across defense and commercial markets.
Expanding Market Reach for Hypersonic and Orbital Technologies
NFA’s propulsion portfolio includes the Mjölnir engine, designed for high-performance space and atmospheric missions, and the Bifröst spacecraft, which supports orbital transfer and maneuvering. The company is also developing Pathfinder, a hypersonic vertical takeoff and landing platform intended for rapid point-to-point transport.
These technologies align with emerging defense priorities around mobility, responsiveness, and access to contested environments. Pournelle’s appointment reflects NFA’s intent to scale operations and engage with strategic partners across the aerospace ecosystem.
Industry Veteran to Drive Strategic Partnerships
Pournelle’s career includes extensive work with NASA, the Department of Defense, and commercial launch providers. At Nanoracks, he played a key role in developing commercial payload services aboard the International Space Station. His experience navigating regulatory frameworks and building customer relationships will support NFA’s efforts to bring its platforms to operational readiness.
New Frontier Aerospace is headquartered in Washington State and is focused on delivering high-speed, high-efficiency propulsion solutions for next-generation aerospace missions.
