PDW Launches Drone Factory 01 in Huntsville, Accelerating Tactical UAS Production for Defense and Aerospace
Performance Drone Works (PDW), a rising force in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), has officially opened its new 90,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama. Dubbed Drone Factory 01 (DF01), the site is purpose-built to support full-rate production of PDW’s flagship tactical drones, including the multi-mission C100 and the AM-FPV attritable munition. The facility marks a significant leap in domestic drone manufacturing capacity, with direct implications for aerospace and defense readiness.
Scaling Up: From Design to Deployment Under One Roof
Located near the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal, DF01 consolidates PDW’s entire production lifecycle, from design and engineering to flight testing and delivery. The facility is designed to produce up to 350 C100 drones and 5,000 AM-FPVs per month, a scale that reflects the growing demand for modular, mission-adaptable UAS across military and public safety sectors.
The C100 platform, known for its payload interoperability and modular architecture, has already secured contracts under the Army’s Medium Range Reconnaissance (MRR) program and the Transformation in Contact Initiative. Its versatility makes it suitable for reconnaissance, surveillance, and tactical support, while the AM-FPV offers a cost-effective solution for high-risk missions requiring expendable assets.
Huntsville’s Aerospace Legacy Fuels PDW’s Expansion
Huntsville’s deep roots in missile development and aerospace engineering provide a strategic backdrop for PDW’s growth. The city’s infrastructure, talent pool, and proximity to defense installations make it an ideal launchpad for advanced drone manufacturing. PDW’s expansion is expected to generate over 500 new jobs and contribute more than $81 million annually to the local economy.
The facility also incorporates advanced pathogen-reduction technology, positioning DF01 as one of the cleanest drone manufacturing sites globally. This attention to operational hygiene reflects PDW’s commitment to quality and resilience in high-throughput environments.
A Tactical Inflection Point for UAS Manufacturing
PDW’s unveiling of DF01 signals a broader shift in how tactical drones are developed and delivered. As global defense strategies increasingly rely on unmanned systems for agility and force multiplication, manufacturers must balance speed, scalability, and reliability. PDW’s vertically integrated approach offers a blueprint for how small UAS can be produced at scale without compromising mission-critical performance.
For aerospace professionals, DF01 represents more than a new facility, it’s a strategic asset in the race to establish domestic dominance in drone technology. With the U.S. Department of Defense prioritizing secure, NDAA-compliant supply chains, PDW’s American-made platforms are well-positioned to meet both operational and policy-driven requirements.
