PLD Space Secures €180 Million to Accelerate Europe’s Independent Launch Capability

PLD Space has closed a €180 million Series C funding round that positions the Spanish launch provider for a rapid scale up of its industrial and operational footprint. The round is led by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, which also becomes a strategic launch customer for the company’s MIURA 5 small satellite launcher. Additional participation from Spain’s CDTI through its INNVIERTE fund, COFIDES through its FOCO fund, and the aerospace and defense focused Nazca fund reinforces growing European commitment to sovereign access to space.

Strategic Investment Supporting Global Market Expansion

The new capital strengthens PLD Space’s ability to compete in a fast growing global launch market. Mitsubishi Electric’s involvement brings both industrial expertise and multi launch commitments for missions serving Japan and the broader Asian region. According to the release, PLD Space will provide small satellite launch services using MIURA 5 across these markets, reflecting international confidence in the company’s technical progress and operational readiness.

Spanish public investment also plays a central role in the round. CDTI, COFIDES, and Nazca Capital add depth to the investor group, aligning national and European priorities around technological sovereignty, industrial competitiveness, and the expansion of Europe’s commercial launch ecosystem. As noted in the release, Spain’s government views PLD Space as a strategic project that strengthens the country’s position within the global space economy.

Industrial Scale Up and Launch Infrastructure Development

PLD Space is investing heavily in the industrial capacity required to support serial production and high cadence launch operations. The company highlights several major infrastructure initiatives, including:

  • A large scale rocket manufacturing facility in Elche, the first in Spain designed for serial launcher production.
  • Expanded testing and integration facilities intended to shorten development cycles and improve competitiveness.
  • A global launch infrastructure footprint spanning Spain, French Guiana, and Oman to support operational redundancy and mission assurance.

These investments are intended to position PLD Space as a fully integrated launch provider, covering design, manufacturing, testing, and launch operations within a vertically integrated model.

Advancing Europe’s Sovereign Access to Space

The funding round arrives at a moment of heightened focus on European autonomy in launch services. With geopolitical pressures reshaping global supply chains and access to launch capacity, PLD Space’s progress contributes to a broader European effort to reduce dependence on non European providers. The company’s MIURA family of launchers, combined with its growing industrial base, supports Europe’s long term objective of maintaining independent, competitive access to orbit.

Spain’s increasing role within the European Space Agency further underscores this trend. The country recently became ESA’s fourth largest contributor, committing €1.854 billion for the 2026 to 2030 period. This milestone reflects a national strategy to expand Spain’s presence in the space sector and strengthen its industrial capabilities.

Market Outlook for Small Satellite Launch Services

PLD Space’s expansion aligns with strong global demand for dedicated small satellite launch capacity. Recent market analyses estimate the small satellite launch services sector at USD 8.2 billion in 2024, with projected growth to USD 27.2 billion by 2033. This growth is driven by the rapid deployment of commercial constellations for communications, earth observation, and remote sensing, as well as increased government investment in space infrastructure.

MIURA 5 is positioned to serve this demand, with PLD Space targeting more than 30 launches per year by 2030. The company reports that the vehicle remains on track for its first test flight in 2026.

Continued Technical Progress and Program Milestones

The Series C round brings PLD Space’s total funding to more than €350 million, supporting a development trajectory that has already delivered several key milestones. These include the successful launch of the MIURA 1 technology demonstrator in October 2023 and ongoing progress on the MIURA 5 orbital launcher. The company has also advanced construction of its launch complex at the Guiana Space Centre and was selected for ESA’s European Launcher Challenge program.

PLD Space emphasizes that its vertically integrated approach, combined with disciplined execution, has enabled a level of maturity uncommon among early stage launch companies in Europe.

Company Overview

PLD Space, founded in 2011 and headquartered in Elche, operates more than 188,000 square meters of facilities across Spain, French Guiana, and Oman. With a team of more than 400 employees, the company develops reusable launch vehicles and related systems designed to support a wide range of commercial and institutional missions. Its MIURA launchers and LINCE crewed capsule reflect a long term strategy to provide comprehensive space transportation services.
